UN failure to deal with the earthquake disaster in northwestern Syria

The Kahraman Maresh earthquake caused very great damage in Turkey and Syria, in what was considered the worst earthquake in the region during the current era.

After the earthquake, large aid arrived in Turkey and relatively good aid reached the regime-controlled areas, while the northwestern regions of Syria were left without any international assistance, and almost no rescue teams or equipment reached them until late in the actual response. Moreover, even aid convoys, that usually arrive in these areas, stopped during the first three days of the earthquake, before the arrival of aid was resumed on the fourth day of the earthquake with only fourteen trucks, which were not originally intended for the earthquake response.

The United Nations later admitted its shortcomings and that it had failed the residents of this area; yet its apology was accompanied by a great openness on its part to the Assad regime, and a great appreciation for its “generous agreement to temporarily open the crossings”, to allow support for the same hospitals and facilities that the regime destroyed and targeted over the past years, as documented by the UN itself!
