Midterm Elections in the United States A new phase of bipartisan balance

The US midterm elections, which were considered exceptional because of the highly polarized circumstances that accompanied them, constituted the first real popularity test after the unprecedented events in the United States on the day of the attack on Congress on January 6, 2021.

These elections, during which all 435 members of the House of Representatives and one third of the 100 Senate members were elected, created a surprise in their results, as the expectations of the Republicans sweeping the seats, especially the camp of former President Donald Trump, did not come true, and the Republicans were able to hardly confirm their majority in the House of Representatives by a small margin, while the Democrats are expected to achieve a small majority in the Senate.

It is remarkable that in these elections, contrary to expectations, many cases proved that Trump was a negative push for those who were publicly supported by him or in whose campaigns he participated. On the other hand, on the democratic side, former President Barack Obama constituted a positive push that contributed to enhancing the results of his party's candidates, first because of his popularity among several segments of American society, and secondly because he worked on developing a road map for democratic candidates that calls for the conversion of their narrative from personal to public, and from blaming Trump and his supporters to focusing on the achievements of President Joe Biden and his party, as well as focusing on the living matters of the American people.

If the results of these elections raise many questions about the mood of the American voter and the compass according to which he voted, they will restore balance to the corridors of decision-making in Washington, at both the domestic and foreign policy levels. This is likely to transpire soon in the foreign-policy sphere, with regard to the Russian war on Ukraine, where committees in the House of Representatives will be under the influence of a Republican majority. This will also be reflected in the voting pattern regarding decisions and allocation of funds; especially those related to Kiev's support.

Of course, the results of these midterm elections bear indications regarding the upcoming presidential battle; as it seems to be granting the Democrats, who were expecting weaker results, a moral to fight that battle strongly. All this; however, does not rule out that the presidential battle may be fierce; especially if Trump wins the Republican nomination.
